Job Description

SENIOR R&D ASPHALT CHEMIST

Carlisle Construction Materials Incorporated, a worldwide leading diversified manufacturer of premium building products and related technology has an immediate opening for a Senior Asphalt Chemist within the Research & Development department, at its Wylie, TX location.  The Senior R&D Asphalt Chemist has the responsibility to upgrade or redesign existing rubberized asphalt film backed membrane, tape, sealant and coating products to reduce costs, replace obsolete raw materials, or improve performance. In addition, the senior chemist is to assist with manufacturing of new and existing products to solve factory and field problems and to monitor technical advances, trends, and environmental issues that may influence future product development direction. The incumbent plans his/her own work to meet objectives established by the Manager, Research & Development.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Upgrade existing rubberized asphalt membrane, tape, sealant, and coating products to improve quality, process ability, or performance, to replace new materials or reduce costs.
  • Solve factory and field problems to maintain the high quality and performance of existing rubberized asphalt membrane, tape, sealant and coating products.
  • Provide technical assistance to Technical Service, Sales, Marketing and Production.  This includes field support to representative, distributors, any field sales, applicators, architects, building owners and other customers as needed.
  • Develop new asphalt membrane, tape, sealant, and coating products for waterproofing systems, and for other industrial applications to improve system performance and increase company profitability.  Development may include preparing and testing experimental formulations in the lab as well as in the factory or field to evaluate performance.  This requires knowledge of asphalt membranes, sealants, coatings, waterproofing systems.
  • Remain abreast of technical advances in asphalt membranes, tapes, sealants and coatings, waterproofing systems, HVAC systems, and environmental issues that may impact product development activities.
  • Run factory trials, select and evaluate alternate sources of raw materials, write purchasing specifications, material data sheets, technical data bulletins and product labels.
  • Knowledge of typical asphalt and waterproofing product testing methods such as PG Grading, ASTM 1970, DSR, Viscosity measurement, Tack testing, etc. is also necessary.
  • Other job duties as required.

Minimum Job Requirements:

A Bachelor's degree with a science major (Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Engineering) is required.  A minimum five years of experience in asphalts membranes, tape, sealant or coating product development especially in rubberized asphalt membranes and coatings and with a background in factory operation and manufacturing process is also required.  Knowledge of asphalt properties, rubber, adhesive, tape, sealant, and coating compounding selection of raw materials, including   extending   and  reinforcing fillers, thixotropes, fire retardants, antioxidants and cure systems, with particular expertise in rubberized asphalt compounds in addition to knowledge of solvent-based, 100% solids and water-based formulations, chemistry and manufacturing processes is necessary.  Travel will be required at about 25%, though some of this will be in support of a local plant.
