Job Description

The Maintenance Lead is responsible for performing repairs on all machinery and equipment, consistent with a multi-craft journeyman level, throughout the plant and office facilities. The Maintenance Lead is also accountable for minor administrative functions including assigning works orders, work order time recording, and parts ordering.

Duties and responsibilities                                                                           

Troubleshoot and Repairs Equipment

  • Evaluates equipment operation and performs necessary action when malfunctions occur or improvements are needed.
  • Performs preventative maintenance activities as dictated by the work schedule.

  •  Distribute work orders, process/ summarize work order data, initiates purchase requisitions, utilizes equipment and process documentation.
  • Assists craftsmen with physical/ technical aspects of job execution on occasion, records/ reorders parts when necessary.
  • Responsible for all testing and documentation of fire system, boiler, and RTO.


  • Education – High School diploma or GED required
  • 2-3 years of previous maintenance experience required; Additional vocational and/or technical training required
  • Technical/Mechanical/Electrical understanding of EPS making process and equipment – mixer stations, expanders, molds, augers, conveyers, raw materials, etc.
  • Journeyman level in electrical or mechanical required
  • 5 years minimum of maintenance experience as a hands-on craftsman in an industrial/manufacturing environment associated with engineering or maintenance activity will be considered in lieu of vocation/technical training
  • Understanding of basic mechanical & electrical principles as they apply to plant/process specific equipment (hydraulic, pneumatic systems also) along with the ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment
  • Understanding of Company and department policies and procedures
  • Understanding of Facilities layout and utilization
  • Technical skills journeyman level in multiple disciplines electrical, mechanical, boilers systems, etc.
  • Leadership skills must be sufficient to direct a crew of four to six skilled craftsmen in a potentially stressful environment on a flexible shift basis, 24 hour operation basis
  • Ability to diagram equipment, or equipment control problems to quickly focus on source of problem and correct it in an efficient manner
  • Verbal and written communication skills must be adequate

Equipment Operated:

  • Hand tools - wrench, screwdriver. Torch, welding equipment
  • Hand operated power tools, drill motor, circular saw                        
  • Power tools - drill press, bench grinder, band saw              
  • Lathe, milling machine
  • Personal computer - use of SAP, and MS Office Suite

Data Used:

  • Daily, monthly production process reports            
  • Work order reports, summaries
  • Energy consumption logs            
  • Production/ maintenance logbooks
  • Air Quality Logs

Materials Used:

  • Payroll - Labor Tickets, attendance reports           
  • Equipment service literature
  • Blueprints, sketches, etc.             
  • Employee handbook

Working conditions/environment

This position conducts their work primarily on the plant floor and in the repair shop.  Occasionally exposed to office atmospheres for meetings, training, etc.  Working environment varies from dirty to clean, hot to cold conditions.

The schedule of this position varies depending on shift assignments.  Regular schedule is Monday through Friday, with usual weekend work.  The Maintenance Lead is also required to work when production is scheduled requiring maintenance coverage.  Frequent weekend & holiday coverage is required for additional maintenance activity and project execution.

Travel will be required on occasion, with adequate advance notice.

  • Walking - coverage of plant - 300,000 sq. ft.
  • Lifting - Required at various times to evaluate equipment or process problem to determine cause and make corrections.  Also required with assisting craftsmen with job execution.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) used

While working on the manufacturing floor, steel toed boots, and eye and hearing protection is required at all times. Other forms of PPE may be required as defined by management.
