Job Description



SUMMARY
Develops programs for fabricating parts on numerically controlled machines. Working from engineering designs and specifications, determines machining requirements and prepares a mathematical definition of the part to be produced. Provides programming support for numerically-controlled equipment to obtain optimum machine utilization and minimize scrap loss ensuring proper tool usage.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Determines the proper speeds, feeds and types of cutters, taking into consideration the materials to be used and machine characteristics.
• Maximizes machine efficiency by determining optimum cutter paths.
• Prepares input for computer to generate actual machine control program, checks final program. Prepares instructions for machine set-up and operation
• Studies blueprints and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and set-up requirements.
• Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control data.
• Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls as required.
• Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials as required.
• Set-ups and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.

• Minimum 2 years exp. in programming CNC machines or CNC 3-axis vertical milling machines.
• Must be able to read and understand blueprints and drawings, understand geometric tolerance, cutting tool geometry and tool grinding
• Ability to follow instructions and perform necessary duties.
• Must be able to verify parts/work completed conforms to standards and supporting documentation.



LANGUAGE SKILLS
• Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
• Must be able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
• Must be able to communicate effectively.



WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is performed in a normal office environment with minimal physical risks involved. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate.

• While performing duties of this position, the employee is occasionally required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, talk and/or hear.
• Good manual dexterity, able to pick up small parts.
• May occasionally be required to lift maximum of 30 lbs.
• May occasionally be required to work irregular and/or extended hours.
• Able to work in an environment that may be subject to occasional loud noises, hazardous materials, chemicals, etc.
