Job Description

Automation Engineer designs and develops software, tooling controls systems and equipment to facilitate engineering and manufacturing operations thorough the plant.


* Work with Process Engineering to determine automation and equipment needs for the factory.
* Work with Process Engineering to scope out project with Functional Requirement Specification, and justification for the project.
* Develop and Design equipment automation solutions to support the factory. This includes component selection (motors, drives, PLCs, sensors, etc.), wiring schematics, and User Interface, etc.
* Work with Maintenance Department in testing, maintaining, and modifying existing systems
* Project Management in executing on new and upgraded equipment. This includes working with vendors, internal tool & die shop, Maintenance Department, Process Engineering, etc. Also ensuring projects execute within the cost and time constraints originally specified.
* Lead, coordinate and/or participate in design reviews -- Complete DQ/IQ/OQ/PQ process as required for qualification of new machinery and/or systems.
* Understand and ensure health & safety compliance with all applicable projects.
* Provide advice and consultancy support. This includes guiding and training of other engineers less experience in this area.
* Participates in Continuous Improvement Projects to improve manufacturing capabilities and/or reduce costs through improved manufacturing techniques, tooling, or automation
* Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Must be able to work in a factory environment to include walking the factory floor and other related activated as well as working in an administrative environment.

Clear ANSI Z87.1 safety rated glasses are required for the job when in the manufacturing areas. Safety toed shoes or boots (ASTM 2413-11 standard) are required in specific manufacturing areas.


This role will be the lead Controls/Automation Design Engineer for the Pottstown Facility. Must have strong experience in machine automation, Motor Control Drives and programming PLCs. Mechanical Machine Design experience preferred.

Min Exp

Automation Engineer I
0-2 years
Entry Level. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or similar Engineering field.
Once trained, able to complete day to day tasks with little supervision but requires guidance and oversight on more complex projects. Previous engineering co-op experience in an applicable field. Able to participate in and advise cross functional project teams.

Automation Engineer II
2-7 years
All requirement for Level I above. Strong understanding of control components such as PLCs, Motors, Drives, Wiring schematics, etc. Able to lead cross functional project teams.

Sr. Automation Engineer
7-10 years
All Requirements per Level II. Repeatedly demonstrates success to effectively organizing, planning, and executing process engineering projects from start to finish. Project Leader for most Complex Process Engineering Projects. Subject Matter Expert in equipment control systems with a proven track record of successful project implementation.

Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.


* Strong knowledge of equipment control systems and components (PLCs, motors, drives, sensors, etc.)
* CAD Skills using SolidWorks Modelling Software.
* Strong design and problem-solving capability to create solutions for the scope of a given project.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
* Able to lead, participate in, collaborate and advise cross funcitonal project teams.
* Manufacturing experience in a custom make to order environment
* Accepts responsibility for own actions, accountable for project deliverables and goals.
