Job Description

Carlisle Construction Materials, a worldwide leading diversified manufacturer of premium building products and related technology has an immediate opening for an EPDM Chemist, at its Carlisle, PA Research & Development facility. The EPDM Chemist has the responsibility to manage research projects and process support for the designated product line or lines supported. Included are raw material specifications, formulations, technical specifications, new product and technology evaluations and standards. The incumbent may or may not supervise professionally trained chemists, engineers and/or technicians and will report to the Manager – EPDM R&D.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Establish and complete R&D projects for assigned projects under guidance of R&D Manager/ Scientist and Senior Chemist. Projects are generally related to the generation or modification of formulations and product specifications including reinforcements.  Projects include the selection of raw materials and raw material suppliers, cost reduction by formula modification, developing new products, and issuing product performance specifications, determining predictive tests and working with quality personnel to make sure that appropriate testing is being accomplished at appropriate frequencies.
  • Design and conduct chemical experiments that use state-of-the-art chemical instrumentation and techniques to modify, improve or develop company products.
  • Use structure-property relationship knowledge to understand root cause for product issues and assist with product development. Understanding polymers and in-depth knowledge of interactions in formulation chemistry is key to this role.
  • Be active in domestic and possibly international standards organizations that have jurisdiction for roofing material and performance standards.  This includes ASTM Committee D-8 on Roofing, Waterproofing, and Bituminous Materials, and SPRI.  Work involves initiating or inputting into the development of standards for roofing.
  • Specify the quality of raw materials for products to ensure good plant processing characteristics and product field performance at the lowest cost.  The work usually requires lab analysis, plant trials, and incoming inspection requirements.  This includes the generation and upkeep of raw material purchasing specifications for polymers and other raw materials.
  • Establish test protocol and requirements to ensure long term field performance of both component and system.  This includes the periodic review of Q.A. and R&D test data for component physical properties, aging and weathering resistance. 
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing.  Includes documentation - authorized formula listing, chemical equivalents list, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering required; MS or PhD preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of compounding or polymer/adhesive industry experience
  • Broad knowledge of polymer compounding required.
  • Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills required
  • Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
